Timeless Insights from the Protestant Reformation for Christian Schools in 2010

With Extreme Relevance for Leading Christian Schools Today

Most Christian schools now find their July looking forward to the freshness of a new school year and start. New books are arriving. Yet by God's grace, time remains for family and friends along with the personal refreshment of our body, mind and soul before school is back in full session. July also affords us an excellent opportunity to refine our vision and mission by planning school improvement.

However you may be planning and investing this July, we trust that you are finding God's favor. Last month we examined some timeless leadership principles from John Wesley. With July, we examine how the Protestant Reformation lends extreme relevance to leading a Christian school today - after the heart and mind of God.

Martin Luther (1483-1546) is best known for his 95 Theses in 1517 A.D. that brought about the Protestant Reformation. However, Luther also had tremendous impact as an educational reformer. Luther once proclaimed, “Above all, in schools of all kinds the chief and most common lesson should be in the Scriptures…but where the Holy Scriptures are not the rule, I advise no one to send his child. Everything must perish where God’s Word is not studied unceasingly.” The above statement is very timely in light of our nation's and the majority of professing Christians' love affair with secular education.

Furthermore, in light of the recent passage of a national health care bill which has throngs of Christians concerned and outspoken, where is the outrage regarding secular education that resembles socialism? Essentially in Luther's framework, protestant education was to be anti-Catholic (not governed by papal authority) and anti-government (not ruled by pagan authority). What might Luther say if he saw the state of American education in 2010?

Additionally, John Calvin's (1509-1564) overall aim was ‘wise and elegant piety’ without the 'distorted wisdom' of the world but with the wisdom and redemption of Christ. This transformation and renewing of the mind allows us to learn as we were created to learn ~ in the Imago Dei by taking every thought captive to Christ. This is further summarized in Calvin’s words as “there cannot be found the least particle of wisdom, light, righteousness, power, rectitude or sincere truth that does not proceed from God and claim him as author”. With the advent of a new school year, are your vision and mission seeking after the truths, mind and heart of our Almighty God?
